Psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis in Grand Rapids

A psychiatric evaluation is the first step toward understanding what you are experiencing and what can help. At SmartMinds Psychiatry in Grand Rapids, Michigan, your provider looks at both the mental and physical sides of your health to reach a clear diagnosis and build a treatment plan around you.

What is a psychiatric evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation, sometimes called a psychiatric assessment or mental health evaluation, is an in-depth appointment with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. It is how we understand your symptoms, rule out other causes and agree on a diagnosis, so that any treatment we recommend is built on solid ground.

Many people book an evaluation when something has felt wrong for a while: low mood that will not lift, constant worry, trouble focusing, sleep problems, mood swings, or reactions to a difficult event that are getting in the way of work, school or relationships.

What happens during your evaluation

  • We talk through your symptoms, when they started and how they affect your daily life.
  • We review your medical, mental health and family history, and any medications or supplements you take.
  • We ask about sleep, appetite, energy, substance use and stress, since each can affect mental health.
  • We discuss your goals and what matters most to you in treatment.
  • You leave with a clear explanation of what we found and the recommended next steps.

Conditions we evaluate

Our team evaluates and treats a wide range of mental health conditions. Common reasons people come to us include:

  • Depression and persistent low mood
  • Anxiety, panic attacks and stress
  • ADHD in children, teens and adults
  • Bipolar disorder and mood swings
  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Grief and loss, anger and impulse control
  • Substance use concerns

After your evaluation: your treatment plan

Your plan is personal. Depending on your diagnosis and preferences it may include psychiatric medication management, therapy and counseling such as CBT, or a combination of both. If attention or learning concerns come up, we may recommend comprehensive ADHD testing with our psychologist.

For depression that has not improved with other treatments, your provider may discuss whether Spravato® (esketamine) therapy could be an option.

Psychiatric evaluations for children and teens

Our psychiatrist, Dr. Sajjad R Sarwar, MD, sees adults as well as children and adolescents. For younger patients we involve parents or caregivers, so the whole family understands the diagnosis and how to help at home and at school.
